Marie Luise Gothein (1863-1931) published this scholarly two-volume history of garden design in German in 1913. Its second edition of 1925 was translated into English by Laura Archer-Hind, edited by gardening author Walter P. Wright (1864-1940), and published in 1928. The highly illustrated work is still regarded as among the most thorough and important surveys of its kind. It begins by examining evidence from both archaeology and literature, as well as climate and soil conditions, to discuss the gardens of ancient Egypt and Assyria, and continues to survey developments worldwide until the twentieth century. Individual gardens, technical innovations, and fashions in horticulture are all discussed in detail. Volume 1 surveys the ancient civilisations of the Near East, Greece and Rome, discusses Byzantine and Islamic gardens, and the importance of monastery gardens in western Europe, and ends with a review of gardening in Europe during the Renaissance.

Landscape architecture plays an important role in shaping the places in which we live and work. But what is it? Landscape architects are involved with a variety of projects, from the reclamation of derelict industrial sites and the restoration of historic city parks to the design of crucial infrastructure such as motorways, dams, and flood defences. In this Very Short Introduction, Ian H. Thompson draws upon both the history and theory of landscape architecture to explore a number of contemporary regeneration and creative projects from around the world.

City by Landscape documents the work of a landscape architect active in the interface between urban planning, open space planning and architecture. For many years Rainer Schmidt Landschaftsarchitekten + Stadtplaner have been among the leading offices in the fields of landscape and urban planning; the projects are also increasingly being realized internationally, above all in North Africa, the Middle East and China. The company's overriding objective is to find answers to the urban-planning problems of today, and to do so in the awareness that 21st century landscape architecture should be a 'built' reflection on how people deal with one another and with nature. The office puts these answers into practice as designs and strikes a successful balance between design, functions and feelings. The intelligent use of natural resources is of prime importance for the work of the office so as to maximize the ecological, economic and social impact of the projects. In various essays the book addresses the central topics in Schmidt's work and documents some 40 selected projects including the highlight Business Towers in Munich, the park city Schwabing, the Congress Center Doha and the Great Mosque of Algiers.
